Lymphedema Care

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymph fluid in the fatty tissues just under your skin. It is a side effect of many cancer therapies, and can occur when lymph nodes or vessels are removed or injured. When the remaining lymphatic system cannot drain enough fluid from an area of the body, the fluid will begin to build up, causing lymphedema. Once you have lymphedema, it can managed, but there is currently no cure.

Who is at risk?

In the U.S., cancer therapies that damage or remove parts of the lymphatic system are the most common cause of lymphedema. If you have had lymph nodes and/or vessels removed or if you have had radiation therapy you have a higher risk of developing lymphedema. The risk goes up with the amount of lymphatic tissue affected.

Do I have Lymphedema?

Lymphedema typically develops slowly, over months or even years. It is easier to treat if you catch it early, so it is a good idea to be aware of the initial signs and symptoms associated with lymphedema.

These may include:
  • Recurrent swelling or a new feeling of heaviness or fullness
  • Your skin changes in color or texture, or it feels tight or hard
  • Decreased flexibility
  • New aching, tingling, or discomfort
  • You haven't gained weight, but you have trouble fitting into your shirt sleeves or pants, or your ring or watch feels tight.

Managing Lymphedema

If you develop lymphedema, it is important to seek help as soon as possible. There are treatments available to reduce the swelling, keep it from getting worse, and decrease the risk of cellulitis infection ( a potentially dangerous condition associated with lymphedema).
